4×4 Sudoku — a gentle start

The smallest Sudoku variant: place 1–4 once per row, column, and 2×2 box. Perfect for learning the rules, playing with kids, or finishing a round in 1–3 minutes.

Why pick 4×4

  • Lowest barrier to entry for first-time Sudoku players
  • Finishes in 1–3 minutes — fits short breaks
  • Kid-friendly thanks to the 1–4 digit set
  • A stepping stone for learning techniques before classic 9×9

Who it's for

If you're new to Sudoku, want something quick during a break, or are introducing the game to kids, start here. Try Easy difficulty first.

4×4 Sudoku rules

Every row, column, and 2×2 box must contain the digits 1 through 4 exactly once. Even on the small board, puzzles are generated and checked for a unique solution.

Today's 4×4

Players on the same UTC date and difficulty receive the same 4×4 puzzle. Because rounds are short, this is the easiest board for building a daily streak.

4×4 solving tips

  • When a row or column already has three digits, fill the one missing digit first.
  • Check each 2×2 box for its missing numbers to reduce the board quickly.
  • At first, say the candidates out loud instead of using notes; it helps the rule click.

Scoring & ranking

4×4 uses the same scoring formula and daily ranking. Zero-hint runs enter Official ranking; runs with hints are separated into Assisted ranking.
